Active Release Technique: The Art Behind A.R.T.

Typically, when one thinks of going for a massage, they think about soothing music and burning incense paired with relaxing pressure and muscle manipulation on aching joints and muscles. While a therapeutic massage has amazing physical and mental benefits, there are times when the body needs more than a gentle caress to help it feel and operate at its best. Active release technique (ART) is a soft tissue system and deep massage technique that treats problems with muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia, and nerves. Combining specific moves, pressure application, and patient movement, ART works by targeting specific problem areas where the tissue is abnormal and therefore, not functioning as well as it should be.

What can ART help to improve?

  • Back pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Shin splints
  • Shoulder pain
  • Sciatica
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tennis Elbow

What To Expect:

ART sessions are a combination of examination and treatment. After the therapist has identified the muscles, tendons, etc. that are hindering movement or causing pain they will begin to specifically target the area. On the instruction of the therapist the patient will go through a series of movements while the therapist applies precise pressure on the target area. As the muscle moves through the motion while under pressure, there is potential for some temporary discomfort, but relief is typically experienced immediately after the movement is complete. There are over 500 unique movements used in ART, meaning that each movement is carefully applied and executed for the specific muscle and the specific problem that is affecting the patient.

Post-Treatment:

Immediately following your active release technique session, the previously overused, overworked, tight, and restricted muscles will release the tension that was causing the discomfort. Patients will experience an increase in the range of motion of the target area, as there is no longer tension restricting movement. Typically, problems that arise due to the overuse of a muscle or muscle group are permanently resolved after receiving ART treatment.
